news-2180 Tue, 14 Jul 2020 11:25:17 +0200 STULZ offers next generation data center climate control with CyberWall http://www.stulz-benelux.com/en/news-events/news/stulz-offers-next-generation-data-center-climate-control-with-cyberwall-2180/ STULZ takes climate control in large, colocation and hyperscale data centers to the next level with... STULZ takes climate control in large, colocation and hyperscale data centers to the next level with CyberWall

STULZ, one of the world's leading providers of energy efficient temperature and humidity management technology for mission critical data center applications, has announced the availability of its CyberWall cooling solution. Designed for operators of large, colocation and hyperscale data centers, it comprises a range of precision air conditioning units specifically developed for facilities with separate aisles. Its horizontal airflow technology enables reliable operation of high IT load densities, without the use of raised floors or side coolers.

Heat density within racks is increasing with each new generation of data center equipment, which is also extremely sensitive and must operate within a strict temperature range. Data center operators that fail to combat this increase in heat load, risk causing significant harm to their IT equipment, reducing its operational life, lowering performance and reliability, and increasing energy expenditure.

In order to protect equipment and offer unrivalled levels of cooling performance, CyberWall is configured around high performance fan walls comprising cutting edge electronically commutated (EC) fans with integrated air/water heat exchangers. This allows a cooling capacity of around 100kW per metre of wall length to be achieved and means that the efficient air conditioning of high power densities, as well as racks of 42U or more, is now possible.

With data center white space now at a premium, STULZ has designed CyberWall so that indoor air handlers with cold water connection can be mounted in rows or stacked without gaps  – making use of all available wall space and optimising system performance. Mounted at the aisle end, where they supply individual rack rows horizontally with cold air, the warm aisle is separated by a containment system with a ceiling duct, so that reliable separation of cold and warm air is guaranteed. The CyberWall system also fits precisely into the existing service corridor, which allows the maintenance of air conditioners to be completed without the need for personnel to enter the server area.

STULZ CyberWall modules achieve an impressive cooling capacity of 220kW, with 16°C water inlet, and an airflow rate of 55,000m³/h per air conditioning unit. As part of its pioneering Custom Indoor Air Handling Unit (AHU) series, STULZ provides a wide range of output sizes and special designs, offering customers a comprehensive portfolio of unit dimensions, components and capacities to meet specific requirements. The combination of CyberWall and the Custom Indoor AHU series means that operators have access to a high performance cooling solution, which takes into account ASHRAE specifications and achieves impressive partial Power Usage Effectiveness (pPUE) values.

‘Climate management is one of the key challenges faced by operators of large, colocation and hyperscale data centers,’ commented Tobias Wolf, Deputy Head of Product Management at STULZ. ‘A failure to understand the consequences of heat generation and deal with it properly can be disastrous. With CyberWall, STULZ has used its extensive research and development capabilities to develop a genuine game changer in effective air conditioning, allowing operators to protect their technology investments and maximise uptime.’

UPDATE 30/03/2020 - Statement from STULZ GmbH on Corona virus

The Corona virus crisis and its consequences present major challenges for the whole world. As a global company with 11 production sites and 21 subsidiaries, we are also having to deal with unprecedented tasks. As a family business, the protection of our employees', partners' and customers' health and economic situation is our priority.

In order to minimize the spread of the virus, a large number of measures have been taken across our sites - all colleagues whose presence is not absolutely necessary are working from home. For the local staff, all realizable hygiene measures (based on recommendations from health organizations such as the WHO) have been taken. This also means that at this stage we have moved all appointments with customers, but also with employees and partners who do not require physical presence, to digital communication channels.

In addition to the health precautions, our specially convened Coronavirus crisis management team also takes care of the smooth running of all business processes. We are in constant contact with all the decision-makers in the global organization to ensure our performance promises in all areas. Through global capacity coordination, we are able to respond directly to local influences of the pandemic and to maintain our sup-ply chain.

In these difficult times, STULZ stands by you as a reliable partner. We are there for you, whether in sales, administration or service.

Stay healthy.

With kind regards

Oliver Stulz
Managing Director

---

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, we would like to share the following with you:

Please be informed that we continue to monitor the global and local developments related to Covid-19, with particular focus on avoiding or minimizing any possible disruptions to business operations and services, considering people safety and well-being as key priorities.

For this reason, we hereby confirm that STULZ has taken action based on the recom- mendations issued by Public Health Authorities, aimed at protecting our employees, clients and businesses. In particular, we have implemented detailed health instructions and recom- mendations for our people on their day to day activities to minimize the risk of Covid-19 infec- tion, and we have also stopped business travels unless under strict control, implementing on large scale alternative solutions to travels (such as teleconferences or similar). While we are always pleased to receive you in our factory, please check with us about any restrictions before planning a visit within the next weeks.

We seize this opportunity to inform about the present situation in our global production companies which the Stulz Group operates:

Foremost in view is China where the Covid-19 epidemic started and we are happy to confirm that both our factories are back to normal operation as more than 90% of our staff is back to work and – also important – all suppliers in China are also back in operation; abt. 77% with a capacity of more than 80%.

We can also confirm that, at present, there are no known issues that may represent a short- term concern: all our other global manufacturing plants are working as usual, and our supply chain is continuously monitored to anticipate any emerging risks and put in place alternative solutions, should any needs arise in the future. We have increased our stock for the production of our standard product range and believe that we are able fulfill our orders on hand unless something extraordinary is happening such as the government closes a production site tem- porarily. For such cases we also could check whether we can utilize one of our other global production sites as alternative as done already in case of China for a very urgent order.

Saying that we must also admit that we cannot look into the future

Should you have any other needs or questions; we are at your disposal as usual: please do not hesitate to reach out to your Sales Manager, should you need so.

Trusting you understand the actions implemented we remain, sincerely yours,

news-2098 Tue, 22 Oct 2019 09:34:00 +0200 Delta T – The air-side temperature difference http://www.stulz-benelux.com/en/news-events/news/delta-t00-2098/ Increased efficiency in the Data Center, improved PUE, lower losses – what does all this have to do... A server in a Data Center takes in air at a certain temperature. Once inside the server, this air warms up due to the heat produced by all the components in the server. The air that then exits the server is roughly 10 °C to 15 °C hotter.

An air conditioning unit in a Data Center also takes in air at a certain temperature. Inside the air conditioning unit, this air is cooled and the extracted heat conveyed to the outside. So the air that exits the air conditioning unit is approximately 10 °C to 15 °C cooler.

That all works out fine then, doesn't it? Unfortunately not.

The above-mentioned 10 °C to 15 °C is the so-called air-side temperature difference, or Delta T.

In a theoretical ideal scenario – a closed circulation of air between the server and the air conditioning unit – there would be a certain air-side temperature difference, and the air conditioning unit would work at its planned maximum level of efficiency.

In a real Data Center, this is sadly not the case. The cold air exits the air conditioning unit, flows through the raised floor, enters the cold aisles through the perforations in the raised floor grilles, is sucked in by the server, heated, blown out into the hot aisle, and then begins its journey back to the air conditioning unit. However, air is stupid and lazy. It doesn't know that this is the route it has to take, and showing it the way with blue and red arrows is no help at all.

Some of the air finds openings in the raised floor, e.g. cable cut-outs in the hot aisle that have not been sealed, gaps between the raised floor grilles or even grilles missing altogether below the racks. It then takes one of these shortcuts back to the hot aisle and straight back to the air conditioning unit, without ever having seen a server from the inside or having taken any of its heat away with it. Other bits of air take the planned route into the cold aisle, but then sneak between the servers through unused rack surfaces, or to either side of the servers, hot-footing it straight to the hot aisle and back to the air conditioning unit. This air does absorb a little heat, which the servers radiate to the outside.

Air that takes in only very little heat on its trip through the Data Center lowers the air-side temperature difference and therefore the efficiency of the entire air conditioning system.

Here's an example:

With an airflow of 45,000 m³/h and a Delta T of 15 °C (return air 35 °C, supply air 20 °C), an ASD 2010 CWU air conditioner from STULZ manages a capacity of 228 kW for a power consumption of 6.2 kW. The result is an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 36.8.

Now, if the actual Delta T is only 10 °C (i.e. return air is only 30 °C) with the same airflow, power consumption and water temperature, capacity drops to 155 kW and the EER is cut to 25.0. As a result, the air conditioning unit has an efficiency 32 % below its possible or planned level.

news-2050 Mon, 17 Jun 2019 08:09:00 +0200 Server cooling: Return air and room air conditioners compared http://www.stulz-benelux.com/en/news-events/news/server-cooling-return-air-and-room-air-conditioners-compared-2050/ Cooling server rooms with room air conditioners? That sounds enticing to many a data center... Cooling server rooms with room air conditioners? That sounds enticing to many a data center operator. Room air conditioners were not originally designed for use in equipment rooms (precision air-conditioning systems capable of regulating room temperature much more accurately were developed for that job), but they have become much cheaper recently, and in tests they now deliver similar results to precision systems. So what is wrong with the idea of saving on an expensive precision air-conditioning system and instead investing in a room air conditioning system?

The answer is in fact: everything. Because the concept underlying room air conditioners is completely different from that of precision systems. Whereas roughly 90 % of a precision air-conditioning system's function is sensitive cooling – meaning it actually lowers the room temperature – about 40 % of a room air conditioner's function is so-called latent cooling. In this mode, the air is dehumidified rather than the room temperature being lowered – so in purely physical terms no cooling actually takes place. That seems absurd at first hearing, but it is nevertheless quite logical. Because the purpose of room air conditioners is to create a room climate which people find comfortable. But humans' temperature perception is linked to the humidity of the air. If it decreases, people will perceive what is actually the same temperature as being cooler. Room air conditioning systems utilize this difference between the actual and perceived room temperature: They first remove humidity from the air, and only switch to physically detectable sensitive cooling when the dehumidification effect alone is no longer sufficient.

STULZ GmbH is extending its product portfolio to include new “ze chillers” in the CyberCool 2 series. These employ proven CyberCool 2 technology and have been optimized specially for use with climate-friendly HFO-1234ze refrigerant.

Hamburg, 1/31/2018 – Hamburg-based STULZ GmbH is expanding its product portfolio with additional “ze chillers” in the CyberCool 2 series. These new chillers are available in air-cooled versions and are designed for use with climate-friendly R-1234ze refrigerant. This HFO blend has a very low global warming potential and, in the context of (EU) regulation no. 517/2014 and the concomitant refrigerant shortage, is a future-proof and efficient alternative to conventional HFC-based refrigerants. STULZ CyberCool 2 ze chillers are available in various output capacities from 300 to 1000 kW and offer reliable and efficient cooling solutions for medium and large data centers, telecommunications and industrial applications.

Like the CyberCool 2 chillers that were introduced in 2013, the ze series is also equipped with the largest possible EC fans and sound-insulated compressor chambers to reduce noise emissions. Thanks to the dynamic control technology developed by STULZ, the CyberCool 2 also supports indirect free cooling. This intelligent way of changing over between compressor operation and indirect free cooling facilitates particularly resource-saving operation coupled with maximum energy efficiency. STULZ’s Mix Mode Boost technology can also use the entire surface of DX coils without needing to regulate the fan speed, which further increases energy efficiency and significantly reduces operating costs. Microchannel condensers constructed entirely of aluminum and equipped with air baffles also optimize flow into the inner coil elements. These STULZ CyberCool 2 ze series chillers are available now. Alternatives to conventional refrigerants are currently being tested.

Micro data centers are stand-alone solutions incorporating all the key components in a specified housing. The rack, cable management, cooling, UPS, power, monitoring and fire protection are already integrated as standard in the STULZ MDC, or available as options. The system is modular and can be configured to customer specifications. High design flexibility is a priority for us. Whether the requirement is for one rack or multiples is not an issue.

Using a combination of series production and custom housing manufacture, we make sure that the MDC system can be expanded as and when you need it. The core of our solution is STULZ CyberRow air conditioners, which have been tried and tested for years. They are integrated in the MDC and can be factory supplied with a wide range of standard features and options. We can build racks and other components into housings of various sizes. Where UPSs, PDUs, biometric, smart card or standard lock access, monitoring and fire protection are concerned, we're flexible, and where necessary we leave the customer to decide which products and makes they wish to use. Equally, STULZ can deliver a fully equipped, ready-to-connect MDC.

And let's not forget after sales support for installation and maintenance. It's precisely with continuously operational air conditioners that this is important, because regular maintenance is indispensable in guaranteeing reliable operation. With our own international branches and a partner network, we cover all the relevant regions worldwide. We know exactly what the local requirements and restrictions are for air conditioning equipment and operation.

This all new solution will be presented during the IT ROOM INFRA event 2016 on the 15th of november in Den Bosch. More information about this event can be found on www.itroominfra.nl.
